/I have had some very nice lunches here and very mediocre dinner [PAT-80].
Cold Food, bad service.
Had my worst meal on the Peninsula at the Antique [LMF-80].
Reasonably good food [KJK-80].
Very good Chicago-style deep dish pizza. Can be ordered as a family-style
meal with soup and salad, which are also quite good.
The BBQ beef snadwich is excellent too. Usually no wait on weekdays.
Has a "No smoking" section [PTZ-80].
Demand No Smoking. Sometimes they forget to ask [JDM-80].
Mediocre [JQJ-8/82].

/This is a barbecue joint, plain and simple. No seating, you
just order your food and take it out. Ribs ($7.50/lb, your
choice of hot or mild sauce) are the main attraction, but
they also have chicken, polish sausage, sweet potato pie,
etc. The ribs are yummy [MOG-6/82].

/A great place, but be prepared to wait. They don't have a large menu

never been disappointed. Also, they offer a (always changing) selection of
open wines [TRG-8/82].

/Cheese board with wine very nice
and less expensive than other dinner items [PAT-80].
I retract my earlier recommendations for this restaurant. I've had dinner
there two or three times during the past year; the atmosphere is very
nice, the food is lousy. The salads are uninspired, main courses are
nicely seasoned but not cooked right, and desserts are only average.
Given the moderately expensive prices, the place just isn't worth it [BPM-80].
Spot for having a moderately overpriced ($10-15 pp) meal.
Weekend brunches are far overpriced [SMC-80].
For the credit card set -- slick setting, OK food, high prices [LES-1/82].
The bar stays open until 1:00 on weekends and often has live music; go
there for drinks after a movie [SM-2/83].

Try scones and the fresh-squeezed orange juice [RJW-80].
The only real problem is that its too popular. Their
tea is worth going for alone [BIL-80].
The best place for breakfast on the Peninsula. The Flee Street Cafe is

the Atherton types [PAT-80].
Same delicious quality as the other Mama'ses [LES-80:81].

/This place took over the old %2Monterey Jack's%*, and is noticeably better.
Seafood and service good. Ask if they have the broiled swordfish. Entrees
range from $7 (beef kabob or sole) to $11 or $12 (abalone or lobster)
[DON-79:80].
Service was very slow on two recent visits. Without a reservation on a
Saturday night, had to wait nearly an hour in the bar for a table. Then
got stuck in a real out-of-the-way corner of the restaurant, and largely
ignored thereafter [RLW-82].

nothing to brag about. And salads are real losers [SMC-80].
I thought the quiche was good, very light and fluffy. The popovers which

/Definitely better than the Winery. Crab legs are excellent; prime rib also
nicely done. A bit on the expensive side [DON-78:80].
Classical music, hot bread, soft butter. A little over-priced
for what you get. Soup was over-spiced and the meat a little
tough [SMC-80].
You can wait long enough to be hungry enough to eat the bone in the boneless
trout that you can't pick out because its too dark [KJK-80].
Good. Try the Calamari [WDG-81].
For the type (prime rib and seafood), it's quite good. Much better than
the Winery, for example [JQJ-8/82].

/A good place to go if you are in a hurry and you want something good to
eat. Sort of heath-foodish like the Good Earth, but nowheres near the
rip-off. They usually have something unusual as a day's special [MRC-80].
The table service may be the worst in any Palo Alto restaurant, but I like
the ambiance. The entertainment seems to be shifting a bit away from
movies and towards live performances [JQJ-8/82].
Be warned: whenever I have eaten there (dinner, brunch), my stomach complained
about food poisoning. Even with X $ off on the movie price, it's a lousy deal.
However, a good place to go for coffee or dessert [TRG-8/82].

/What a find! This place is great for a quick, cheap, and tasty meal out
in Woodside. The locals have dinner here; one night Joan Baez was sitting
at the table next to mine. They have various hamburger platters, sausages,
and one dinner special (such as stew) each evening. You order at the
bar and they bring it to your table. One of the owners is a frenchman
who makes his own French Onion Soup (authentic!!) and fresh pastries daily.
You can have a full dinner here for $5 or so, and it is really a pleasant
place - great for an "after the beach" dinner [ALL-10/82].

universe, although the prices seem to be skyrocketing.
I actually prefer the Szechuan dishes now that Mr. Fong is gone.
They seem to be less variable in quality. Avoid Twice-Cooked-Pork
and Moo Shoo Pork. The first is grossly oversweetened and the second
has little more than lettuce [SMC-3/82].

Very good. They have a wide variety of Szechuan and other styles of
dishes. The dishes were uniformly good, unlike the sometimes-variable The
Little Restaurant. Hot dishes were reasonably hot (i.e. noticeable but
not overpowering), not nearly as hot as the hottest at The Little

Unusual Diem Sum. Scallion cakes and crispy oil sticks interesting [SM-80].

Dishes to concentrate on are: Mu Shu Pork, Hunan Style

/Amazing! A quality restaurant in Mountain View! Food is quite good,
though perhaps not the equal of some of the best (e.g. Maddalena's),
and reasonably priced for the quality. But the nicest part is the
atmosphere; you can go casually (though not grubbily) dressed and not
feel out of place, or you can go formally and feel just as
comfortable. Augusto and his brother, who take care of most of the
service, are quite willing to chat if you want to and things aren't
too rushed, and both are pleasant conversationalists. The place used
to be a piano bar, and Augusto still plays a fine rag-time piano when
he has the time. What with the piano, and the people, and the fine
food, you can easily spend an entire evening there [DON-78:80].
Very pleasant. Matches are engraved with your reservation name and women
get menus without prices. Cherries Jubilee for 2 is expensive ($10.00) but
delicious; each cherry is stuffed with an almond [SM-80].
Everything Don said in '78 is still true. This is a simply wonderful
place. The food is consistently excellent, service is personal and
friendly. Try the Lobster Scampi or the Baby Scallops (when available).
The Grand Marnier Souffle is a superb dessert, and the Nero's Coffee
afterwards is a visual and taste delight. Plan on spending the evening; a
table reserved at Augusto's is yours for the night. Wine list is good,

A great place for lunch. Try to get a table outdoors. The "wine list" is

Prices for wine are high and the food is boring, but the atmosphere is
pleasant if you want to sit outdoors or to select your wine by looking at

I always have a great time at this restaurant. They really try

Well prepared dishes generally, based on good ingredients [LES-80:82].
A lousy place, you pay for the "interior design" [TRG-8/82].

⊗Beto's Mexican Cuisine
/2290 El Camino Real, Mountain View
/415 964-9433
/11:30am-9:00pm Mon-Thu, 11am-10:30pm Fri, 5pm-8:30pm Sat-Sun. VS, MC.
/Beto has moved from his old location north a mile or so. His old place,
Casablanca, no longer exists. The new place is much nicer -- not a hole in the
wall any more. Beto has gone commercial, with his likeness on the menu, the
beer mugs and the wine glasses. The interior of the restaurant isn't bad for
Contemporary Mexican-American Tacky. It's much larger than Casablanca was,
the kitchen is much bigger (and cleaner), and there's even a hostess to seat you.
The food hasn't suffered at all from the move -- in fact, it may even be
better, due to the brand-spanking-new kitchen. Beto's hot sauce is the best
around; terrifically hot but delicious. The menu, which offers standard Mexican
fare, has grown both in size and in price. Most dinner combinations are now in
the $5.50 to $5.95 range, but the amount of food you get is worth it. Try a 1/2
order of nachos as an appetizer for two people. Beto will come over to your table
and tell you how his nachos are featured in his new radio commercial. (!)
This is my favorite local Mexican restaurant. You can eat as much or as
little as you like, building your own combinations of enchiladas, burritos,
rellenos, tostadas, etc., etc. The beer mugs are well chilled, the service is
efficient but unhurried, and the background music is unobtrusive. Beto's wife
Alicia is now running a very pleasant little boutique in the front. She's as
friendly and chatty as Beto, and will tell you all about the origins of her
imported items.
All in all, a very pleasant place. Highly recommended [RLW-7/81].
Waiting area has tacky gift shop [JIM-12/81].

/Consistently delicious [LES-80:82].
Absolutely the best Mexican food north of the border.
All sauces are whipped and the nachos are out of this world.
Enchiladas are excellent, as well as the tostadas. Everything
is great. For dessert, have flan and skip the losing bunelos [SMC-80].
The best mexican food north of the border [FB-80].
Consistently good, never too crowded [MOG-80].
A good value [TRG-8/82].
I highly recommend it.
The food is prepared by default in a
fairly spicy way, but they will usually make it anyway that you want.
Compares very nicely to Casa Real which is probably the most
popular Mexican Restaurant in the city; however, they don't serve beef
stew tacos [PMU-10/82].
Make their own sangria. Authentic music [JVC-82].

Portions not quite as large but still good [TVR-80].
Big burrito is getting too watery. Strange department store
atmosphere. Nachos were losing. Better food can be had

/Service OK, but food is really tasty, especially the pastille. Lamb
dishes are good. Belly dancer yummy too [BPM-78].
I agree entirely with BPM. Not all seats are in the room with the dancer,
though (sigh) [DON-79:80].
Arrogant staff, ridiculous wine prices ($5.00 corkage fee too!). Go to
the city instead [SM-80].
Good food; expensive but worth it [ARK-80].
The belly dancer is what I remember most . . . Yum!!! [MRC-80].
A really sensual experence. Great spicy lentil soup and pastlla (a chicken
pie covered with cinnamon and powdered sugar).
Currently $15 pp. without wine. To be truly authentic, eat only with your
right hand [PTZ-80].
To be really truly authentic, don't let them serve the women in your party
until after the men have finished, and feed them in the back room [LES-80].
Good Moroccan food, although the dessert was unimpressive. Overpriced
The sugar-chicken was delicious. Belly-dancers were good [SMC-3/82].

/I like seafood and eat here more than any other restaurant.
Great fresh seafood (perfectly done) with some veal and chicken (do not

like the casual atmosphere and service, at least on weekdays when
it's not too crowded. OK wine list tho I bring my own [DEW-4/83].

A great place to spend a warm afternoon [LES-66:82].
Great atmosphere on a warm day, I prefer salami and cheese over the hamburgers
but usually stick to their very good fries and beer [PAT-75:80].
A bunch of us were sitting having lunch & beers at Zot's, trying to think

⊗The Good Earth, Palo Alto
/185 University Avenue, Palo Alto
/415 321-9449
/7:30am-10:30pm daily. Checks accepted, no cards.
/They try to satisfy everybody and mostly succeed. Good, but they're
getting rather expensive. Still worth it if you're not poor. Note: They
try to not look like a francise operation, but I think they really are.
They come in clusters of a few stores. I know of Good Earth's in Marin
County, San Francisco, Berkeley, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles, besides
the local grouping of Palo Alto, Cupertino and Santa Clara.
Check/card rules vary slightly, but they're basically the same place
[TVR-79:80].
Good cinnamon spice tea and omelettes, particularly the Santa Cruz special,
with artichoke hearts, avocado, tomatoes, and cheese.
Acapulco omelette has a %2lot%1 of green chile -- yummy! [PTZ-80].
Food tastes politically correct, not good. Not worth the price [MOG-80].
Aw come on, it's not that expensive. Prices seem worth it to me --
distinctive cusine, interestingly prepared [NCR-9/81].
Quality way down [IAN-11/82].

food is better than at The Good Earth. Fresh fruit juices are excellent

/A family-run outfit (the owner is a former vice-premier
of South Vietnam). Try their squid dishes; if you don't
fancy squid try a curry dish or the pork barbeque. They
have some outstanding desserts; flan (custard), banana
in coconut milk, and their house delight (if they have
it) which is a pure delight! [MRC-80].

⊗Vietnam
/1010 Doyle Street, Menlo Park
/415 326-2501

Owners came over with an American friend around 1970. Shy, but
friendly if you can get them to talk. A full dinner can be had for
$2.75 [BIL-80].
Good to excellent, but expensive for the amount of food you get [WDG-5/81].
Vietnamese food seems to smell like garbage, but don't let that
deter you -- it's apparently uses a lot of a relative of the cabbage [NCR-10/82].
